Australia to Introduce Bitcoin Tax

Tax authorities of the country have decided that operations with Bitcoin are subject to the Goods and Services Tax and suggested that the cryptocurrency should not be classified as “money”. This will mainly affect Australian businesses that accept and change Bitcoins, providing service for customers who want to trade real money for the digital currency. Now, when Bitcoin is bought from an exchange, the latter will have to pay tax on the supply of the cryptocurrency.

Goods and Services Tax doesn’t normally apply to financial transactions, i.e. a conventional money exchange won’t have to pay it when Australians buy foreign currency. So, the application of this tax to Bitcoin will make running a Bitcoin exchange in the country an expensive proposition, because it is due on the total amount of cryptocurrency supplied, not on the cut the service takes above the market value.

Nevertheless, the way an exchange operates in reality will make a difference. Apparently, Bitcoin “trading platforms” will be liable for much less tax under the new rules, with a difference being in whether the firm buys and sells Bitcoin itself, or simply facilitates transactions between 3rd parties like a stock exchange. In the latter case, the tax is only due on the percentage commission the service charges, rather than on the total amount purchased.

In the meantime, the decision will also complicate operations involving spending Bitcoin, as it would require sellers accepting the cryptocurrency to treat it as a “taxable supply”, unlike money exchanged for goods and services. Tax authorities justified treating Bitcoin in this way by the fact that the cryptocurrency is not a legally recognized universal means of exchange and form of payment by the laws of any country – in other words, it is not currency and therefore not money.

Apple Investigated in Canada over iPhone Sales

The tech giant has been ordered to hand over papers to the Canadian Competition Bureau. The agency investigates into whether Apple used unfair tactics to boost iPhone sales in the country, pointing out that the agreements Apple concluded with mobile networks could have encouraged the operators to increase the prices of rival phones.

Thanks to huge consumer demand for the iPhone, its manufacture got considerable bargaining power when negotiating contracts with mobile operators. Now the Competition Bureau thinks that Apple has abused its position.

Apple was given 3 months to provide all the documents to the agency, including the deals reached with Canadian mobile operators. In the meantime, agency pointed out that it was possible the tech giant could challenge of the right of Canadian courts to force its Canadian subsidiary to provide records held by the American parent company. On the other hand, the Canadian competition law enables the local courts to compel the production of documents held abroad.

Back in 2013, the European Commission made a similar step, sending out a questionnaire to mobile network operators trying to find out Apple’s sales tactics with iPhones. The Commission claimed it had information that the company may have colluded with mobile network operators, which could have potentially led to the foreclosure of other smartphone manufacturers from the markets. The investigation was ignited by complaints from networks about the contracts that had been struck with the company. In result, no anti-trust investigation was started.

Apple has recently won another long-lasting lawsuit concerning iPods and iTunes, where it was accused of preventing the use of competing music players by consumers.

Hollywood Tries to Revive SOPA

Hollywood was accused by Google of trying to revive the failed Stop Online Piracy Act, which was supposed to enable wholesale website filtering. Google claims that Hollywood studios, via the MPAA, decided to push through the effects of SOPA using non-legislative measures. The search giant alleges that the MPAA led a secret, coordinated campaign to revive the failed bill and helped bring legal arguments in connection with a recent court investigation.

As you might know, SOPA was a legislation put before the US House of Representatives supposed to significantly expand the powers of American authorities to fight Internet trafficking in copyrighted and counterfeited goods.

SOPA gave rights owners the power to request court orders to forbid advertising networks including Google and payment facilities from doing business with infringing websites. Copyright owners could also ban search engines from linking to infringing websites and receive court orders that demand ISPs to block access to those online services.

However, this bill was defeated two years ago despite the backing of the MPAA thanks to a public outcry, which prompted about 115,000 sites, including Google, to protest against SOPA. A petition against the bill was signed by 10 million people; 8 million made phone calls to Congress, and 4 million sent emails.

Now Google points at news reports accusing the movie outfit and 6 studios of colluding in order to start a new campaign intended to secretly revive SOPA. The search giant alleges that the industry is trying to achieve wholesale website blocking by convincing state prosecutors to take up the fight against the company.

In the meantime, in the United Kingdom, the rights owners are able to seek court orders in order to force broadband providers to block access to online portals they deem as infringing copyright. Such portals as The Pirate Bay have been blocked in the country since 2012.

According to media reports, the movie studios allocated $500,000 annually for legal support, which was increased to $1.175 million for this campaign.

Google is particularly disappointed with what this all means for the Motion Picture Association of America itself, a group founded in part to promote and defend the First Amendment and artists’ right to free expression, which is now for some reason trying to secretly censor the web.

Celebrities Lost Millions of Instagram Followers

Famous photo-sharing app Instagram has recently scrubbed multiple spam accounts and bots. As a result, many accounts of celebrities lost thousands or even millions of followers in just a few hours.

For example, Justin Bieber lost as many as 3.5 million followers, hip-hop star Akon – about 56% of his Instagram chums. Other artists also suffered: rappers Tyga and Ma$e lost 1.5 million followers. Kim Kardashian shed some 1.3 million followers. Of course, most of the celebrities and civilian Instagrammers didn’t like their free-falling follower count, but others reveled in the massacre.

The company explained that it had to delete accounts that posted links and spam – mostly bot accounts. As you know, online bots are nothing more than software apps that perform automated or semi-automated tasks. It should be noted that there are more bots out there than there are people on Earth.

You might have noticed the adverts of the companies that promised the opportunity to buy a bunch of followers on social networking websites like Twitter, Instagram and Vine so that you would seem more popular. They usually “sell” bot followers. As you can understand, their services are now a risky investment, because you can lose all of those “bought” followers overnight. In addition, Instagram’s latest move means that people making money from sponsored publications thanks to their large follower count also stand to lose out.

The photo-sharing app, owned by Facebook, recognized that spamming was a huge problem. Instagram said that after receiving feedback from members in the Instagram community, they had to fix an issue, which incorrectly included inactive accounts in follower/following lists. By the way, the Instagram’s own account lost the most followers – 18 million.

Madonna New Songs Leaked Online

It was recently revealed that 14 more tracks from Madonna’s upcoming album, Rebel Heart, have been leaked online. Previously it was reported that 13 early demos from the album were also stolen. Media reports say that the new tracks include collaboration between Madonna and Pharrell William).

This news again highlights the difficulties of protecting creative content and other personal information, following the recent hack of Sony Pictures. Madonna admitted that the scale of the theft meant that perhaps her own computer had been hacked. In other words, she doesn’t blame anyone connected to making the album.

After the tracks were leaked, the singer swiftly released 6 official tracks from new album, which is not due out until March, on iTunes. As a result, Madonna immediately became No.1 in the iTunes chart in 36 countries.

It should be noted that Madonna was not the only one in the music industry to suffer high-profile music leaks – even though security measures become tougher and tougher. Back in 2013, Kenya West’s album Yeezus leaked in full on the Internet in advance of its release. However, Madonna’s case was different, because the hacker stole not only music, but also images that she had never seen before.

While many musicians face the leak of their songs a few days ahead of their official release, security expert point out that sometimes hackers have different reasons to attack. For instance, the hack of Sony Pictures is suspected of turning into a diplomatic row after the hacking ring that calls itself Guardians of Power took responsibility for the leak and then issued threats against people who might see the controversial movie The Interview on its release. As a result, the movie studio had to pull the movie.
